Beethoven, known for his mood swings and rages as much as for his capacity for fantasy, was a prodigious talent giving his first public performances at the age of eight. Beethoven, a short, well-built man, was not unpopular with the ladies. Speculation continues over the identity of the: "Immortal Beloved" to whom he wrote a letter discovered after his death in 1824. Was it the married Countess Giuletta Guicciardi, his friend Antoine Brentano, or even his sister-in-law Johanna van Beethoven? Beethoven's many romantic intrigues give his music the beauty and emotion of unfulfilled desires. Composing in the wake of the French Revolution his symphonies arguably reflect the contrasts of Europe at that time. Close your eyes and you can almost imagine yourself in that tumultuous time.
