African music is powerful, soulful and rhythmically complex and gives the listener an intriguing insight into the spirit of its people. Expressing all aspects of African life through sound - their music reveals the heart and soul of this fascinating and diverse continent. When the African people were taken to America and the Caribbean as slaves, all they had left was their music. In spite of their slavery, the force of African music spread to every corner of the globe. In the Caribbean, under the influence of the British, French and Spanish, calypso was born. Next came Soca, or soul calypso, which evolved into reggae. And, after the sounds of the West Indies had been experimented with, rhythm and blues manifested. Meanwhile in America, everything was being done to deny the African slaves their music - tribal groups were split up and drums destroyed. Fortunately these proud people carried music in their hearts. Their sultry and bittersweet work and gospel songs not only survived but evolved into the blues. Then, with some assistance from the banjo - the only instrument the African people were allowed to play - jazz emerged.
