Referred to by locals as 'Pais de Poetas' (Land of the Poets), the stunning South American country of Chile has a rich tradition of folkloric music, with heartfelt and poetic songs influenced by complex internal politics as well as Spanish, Argentine, French, English and Mexican rhythms. The cueca, Chile's national dance, is said to be the 'sound' of the country. Pianos, accordions, guitars and song accompany this moving dance, which is quick-paced, always in a major key and typified by famous tunes such as La Rosa y el Clavel (The Rose and the Carnation), Adios, Santiago Querido (Goodbye, Dear Santiago) and La Consentida (the spoilt Girl). Then there's the waltz, which is at once melancholic and beautiful, and has spawned Chile's most famous song - Si Vas Para Chile (if You Ever Go To Chile).
