The Gypsy Road is long and winding - it stretches all the way from Rajasthan in India to the Andalusian region of Spain and beyond - but the Balkan countries in Eastern Europe lay claim to the world's largest Rom (gypsy) populations. It's a fact that the Rom have made an indelible mark on Balkan culture and music - gypsy musicians have long been absorbing the influences of the countries through which the have journeyed, and the unique sounds they have created transcend borders and ethnicities. Complex rhythms have emerged from a unique blend of Greek, Turkish and Eastern European sounds, with diverse styles such as Spanish flamenco, Romanian drinking music, Russian and Rajasthani folk songs and Bulgarian wedding tunes all thrown into the heady mix.
