Raw, diverse and power-packed, Jamaican music has a thick beat that begs to be played out loud - really loud! Like the people that live on this laid-back tropical island, the music has always been wild, spirited and made for dancing. As jazz began to fragment and blend with the catchy backbeat of New Orleans-style R&B and mento melodies., ska emerged and then evolved into the more rhythmically relaxed and sophisticated rock steady. As new and exciting as these sounds were, however, they did little to prepare the world for the rise of reggae in the late 1960s. Reggae is the sound of Jamaica. This earth-shaking music is the offspring of a mix that can be traced back to the late 1950s and early 1960s, when Jamaicans would gather to dance in open spaces all over the city of Kingston. Primitive sound systems throbbed with the latest jazz and R&B grooves from America, and as the new rhythms pulsed and the people partied, those with an ear for music listened up.
