Think of Latin music and you conjure up the spicy mix of rhythms that originate in Puerto Rico, Cuba, Africa, Spain, the Caribbean and, later, in the U.S of A. among New York's Latino-Afro American community. Each country adds a touch of flavour to the Latin mood and the result is a dish that is hot and sexy. Latin music throbs with multicultural heritage, in its instruments, rhythms, lyrics and dance styles. "Son" music, a fusion of Spanish popular music and the African rhythm rumba, was the heartbeat of the Cuban sound that later became salsa and packed the dance floors of New York in the 1970s when Tito Puente played the dance halls. Dancers would fill their bodies with this flood for the soul, the floor rippling with couples who were cheek to cheek, pelvis to pelvis, writhing to the beat. It was liberating, lively...Latin with a twist!
